MOURNS LOSS OF BATTALION CHIEF GENE MULLINS

28-Year Fire Service Veteran Succumbs to Cancer After a 3-Year Battle

San Carlos, California, June 4, 2002 - The South County Fire Protection Authority, which serves the San Mateo County Cities of Belmont and San Carlos, and the unincorporated Harbor Industrial Area, has the sad duty to report that Battalion Chief Gene Mullins, age 51, died at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, June 1, 2002, at his Half Moon Bay home after a nearly three-year battle with cancer.

Battalion Chief Mullins served with the South County Fire Protection Authority and one of its predecessor agencies - the Belmont Fire Protection District - since December 1, 1975. He was promoted to the rank of Fire Captain on December 30, 1980, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Fire Battalion Chief on December 1, 1991. He also served as the Fire Authority's Interim Fire Chief between April 1, 1994 and January 15, 1995, inclusive. While a Fire Captain, Battalion Chief Mullins had assignments in Fire Prevention and Training, as well as Suppression & Rescue. While a Fire Battalion Chief, Battalion Chief Mullins had an assignments in Training, as well as Suppression & Rescue. His final Fire Authority duty assignment as a Fire Battalion Chief was in the Suppression & Rescue Division as the "C" Shift Commander.

Battalion Chief Mullins received an Associate of Arts degree from the College of San Mateo in 1971, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University in 1974. He was also a California Community College credentialed instructor, and a State-certified Fire Officer.

Battalion Chief Mullins, a second-generation firefighter - his late Father, Robert, had previously served with the Office of the California State Fire Marshal and the Colma Fire Protection District - is survived by his wife of thirty years, Nancy, two teenage daughters, Katelyn and Rachael, his Mother, Eris, of Point Montara, and three brothers - Jerry of Newark, and Randy and Bruce of Half Moon Bay. Randy also is a firefighter, serving with the Half Moon Bay Fire Protection District.

A "line of duty death" memorial service, celebrating the life of Battalion Chief Mullins, will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon, June 7, 2002 at the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), which is located directly across the street from the Carlmont Village Shopping Center at 1040 Alameda De Las Pulgas, near Ralston Avenue, in Belmont (Thomas Brothers Map Book - 769/C-2). A reception will immediately follow the memorial service at IHM's Fellowship Hall.
